Angelica dahurica grows wild in northeastern China, in damp habitats often near riverbanks and along streams. For medicinal purposes, these white colored roots are collected at the end of summer and in autumn when the leaves turn yellow.
As an essential oil, Bali Zhi promotes blood circulation, and along with its warming nature is good for cold extremities as a 4% dilution in Witch Hazel or Rice vinegar as an invigorating rub.
Its action is ascending.Traditionally, it is frequently used for Yang Ming type headache, to clear the sinuses, sinus pressure and toothache, and as an essential oil, is also affective generally for head wind affecting vision or hearing, dizziness. Its action is ascending. A classic combination for headaches is Bai Zhi with Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum wallichii).
Dermatologically, Bai Zhi essential oil may be applied as an aid to reduce swelling, expel pus, lymph congestion, vaginal discharge and eliminate toxins for sores, accesses and insect bites. It promotes clear complexion, and can be used topically to eliminate blemishes, or dark spots. It accomplishes this partially because it is a mild irritant therefore it is best to used in no higher than a 4% dilution.
For toothaches, mix one drop of Bai Zhi, one drop of Ding Xiang (clove) and one drop of Almond oil and dab on the painful tooth.
Angelica dahurica essential oil has anti-fungal, anti-sceptic, anti-microbial properties and additionally, promotes healthy tissue growth.
