NU ZHEN ZI (“Female Chastity Seed,” Ligustrum Lucidum Fructus)

Our Nu Zhen Zi essential oil emits a fresh herbaceous, sweet aroma like new mowed grass with an earthy, slightly sharp undertone. Its effect is nourishing and moistening. It has velvety texture and a rich dark olive green color.

Naive to Southern China, Ligustrum Lucidum is a species of flowering plant in the olive family with strongly aromatic white flowers.

Its berries, used in traditional Chinese medicine, are highly prized for nourishing Kidney and Liver Yin and Jing. As such they are used in treatment of tinnitus, vertigo, premature greying of the hair, soreness of lower back and knees and general support of aging or chronic, debilitating illness.

Due to its ability to nourish the Liver Yin, Nu Zhen Zi brightens the eyes and is used in eye disorders, especially associated with dryness and deficiency. For this purpose, Nu Zhen Zi may be combined with essential oils of Gou Qi Zi and Carrot Seed.

Nu Zhen Zi is helpful for menopausal symptoms with deficiency heat such as dryness, thirst, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, mood swings, and steaming bone sensations. In this case practitioners may consider a blend with essential oils such as Nu Zhen Zi, Wu Wei Zi, Man Jing Zi, and Rose with the addition of Bai Zi Ren for sleep issues.

Pharmacological research has suggested that Nu Zhen Zi is anti diabetic, associated with a marked reduction of plasma glucose. In traditional medicine it is commonly used for treatment of diabetes mellitus.
