Sandalwood - Tan Xiang (Santalum album)
Steam distilled Santalum album

Indian Sandalwood essential oil has an exotic aroma that is sweet, creamy and smooth, with warm spice tones. The wood is steam distilled to produce this oil.
Santalum album is a tropical evergreen native to south and southeast Asia and has been utilized for medicinal and religious purposes for centuries; this species of Sandalwood is also traditionally used in Chinese Medicine.
The flowers produced by this tree are initially white in juvenile trees, and over time will start producing red flowers in mature trees; the bark of young trees appears to be dark (almost black) and smooth and will transform into a reddish and cracked appearance with age. Black is the color of the Water element and is associated with the Kidneys; the Kidneys store pre-natal essence and thus our ancestral energy. White is the color of the Metal element and is associated with the Lungs; the Lungs house the “Po”, or Corporeal Soul, which is embodied during conception. Over time, both the flowers and bark become red; red is the color of the Heart, the Imperial Fire, and houses the Shen and consciousness. The maturation of this tree symbolizes the transition from ancestral and instinctual characteristics to a more deeply conscious and complex state of existence. It is estimated that sandalwood trees start to enter their mature states and appearance after 7 years, and start producing its distinguishable aroma after 10 years. In Chinese Medicine philosophy, humans have benchmarks in growth and maturation in 7 year (in females) and 8 year (in males) cycles, and 10 years represents renewal; and most interestingly, this tree appears to follow a similar pattern. Perhaps this similarity is an explanation to the innate connection between humans and this revered evergreen.
Australian Sandalwood represents an ecologically responsible alternative to mitigate former overproduction of this endangered tree and subsequent environmental degradation . The growers/distillers of this Sandalwood are committed to a sustainable sandalwood culture, employing practices and techniques to support mixed-age plantations with both new and old growth trees, while protecting and supporting the native wildlife and biodiversity of Australia. No pesticides are ever used in the production of Sandalwood in Australia.
